Cheers to the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

On July 20th, 2019 the United States of America celebrates 50 years since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their first steps on the moon. This was an iconic moment in history that is being commemorated with events, TV specials & interviews around the world.

At The Watergate Hotel, we are celebrating in our own way, and for July we have added The Moonwalker cocktail and our take on a moon pie dessert – Moon Crunch.

The Moonwalker is a fizzy, buzzy thirst quencher and retro riff on the quintessential drink mix, Tang. Although, many people think NASA invented Tang that is not actually the case. Tang was introduced to NASA officials as they were searching for a way to transport tasty drinks into space. Even if NASA didn’t invent the tangy powder – what could be more nostalgic and out-of-this-world then a specialty cocktail with Tang? How about drinking this specialty and refreshing cocktail with unobstructed views at The Top of the Gate, The Watergate’s rooftop lounge.

If you are looking for something a bit more decadent, join us at the iconic Kingbird Restaurant where our executive chef Sébastien Giannini puts his own spin on the beloved moon-centric dessert. The Moon Crunch is an inspired twist on the classic Moon Pie, made with moon-hued Macarons, Ice Cream, Mini Marshmallows, and a Silver Leaf. Fun tip: If you hit it with your Moon Crunch with your spoon you can make a “Crater” just like the moon’s surface!
